From April 8th to 10th, the IISM-IM team, led by Prof. Weinhardt, gathered for their semester retreat at the KD2 Lab. The retreat kicked off with a Brown Bag workshop by our alumni Prof.Dr. Henner Gimpel, Professor of Digital Management at University Hohenheim. As a chair, we reflected and strategized on incorporating AI and AI tools for teaching (KI für Lehre), its opportunities and its limitations. Following the presentations and research project presentations from the PDX and DABS research groups, we concluded the evening with delicious and cosy Japanese dining. The second day continued with presentations from the Digital Democracy and Participation and Smart Grids for Energy Markets groups. The retreat offered a valuable opportunity for each researcher to present their ongoing projects, receive constructive feedback, and refine their ideas and methodologies.
In addition to these productive work sessions, the team engaged in several workshops focused on team-building, and rethinking team structures. We also had an invited workshop from Dr. Markus Götz from Scientific Computing Center, where we explored the potential of KIT’s high performance computing facilities for our respective research areas.
Interspersed with the presentations, there was also time to slow down and connect with each other. The team explored the exquisite technology-inspired art exhibits at ZKM Karlsruhe, with engaging discussions on digital art, evolution of humans with technology, and its subtle roles in shaping society. We wrapped the day with an evening of bowling and friendly team games like ice hockey and table football. This balance of work, learning, and reflective team-building made for an energizing retreat, and served as a great head start into the semester ahead.
